  1. Useful resources & shopping

The fridge is easy to overlook on a self-catering departure because most packing happens elsewhere. A drink, personal container or ingredient can remain after the bags appear complete. Make the fridge check a named part of checkout, with enough time to handle food and belongings appropriately.

Review before the final shop

Look at what remains while there is still time to plan the last meals. Keep the food's labels and storage requirements clear, and follow suitable food-safety guidance. Do not use the approaching departure as a reason to eat something whose suitability is uncertain or to carry it under inappropriate conditions.

The leftover-food planning guide helps prevent the final check from becoming a surprise. Choose smaller additions for the remaining meals where practical. A complete final shop should account for what is already stored rather than repeating the first week's quantities automatically.

Assign the actual check

Agree who will inspect the fridge and when. One named person can handle the task while others complete different departure jobs. The responsibility should include confirming that the check is finished, not simply opening the door while several people assume someone else is dealing with the contents.

Use the family departure-task guide to keep the jobs distinct. If an item belongs to a particular traveller, ask them what should happen to it before the final morning. Avoid leaving a shared container on the counter as an unanswered question beside the packed luggage.

Separate food from personal equipment

Identify your containers, reusable bottles or other belongings and handle them according to their care instructions. Keep them distinct from property equipment. Do not pack a borrowed container because it happens to hold your food, or leave your own item behind because it resembles something supplied with the apartment.

For food intended to travel onward, check that the transport and storage can meet its actual requirements. Seek appropriate authoritative guidance where needed. A leakproof lid does not by itself establish a suitable journey for the contents. Choose an appropriate alternative if the onward plan cannot support them.

Follow the property's departure instructions

Check what the provider asks guests to do with remaining food and the fridge itself. Follow the agreed cleaning and disposal process, using suitable methods for the appliance and products. Do not switch off equipment or alter settings unless instructed through an appropriate arrangement.

What if the property allows unopened food to remain? Follow its specific conditions rather than making a general assumption. Keep any permitted items clearly distinguishable and appropriately stored. The check is complete when your personal equipment is accounted for, food has a suitable destination and the appliance is left as instructed, not merely when its door has been opened once during the rush to leave.
